federal relief, mitt romney is now claiming that he -- not president obama saved g.m. and chrysler. can you believe it? mitt romney ought to burn in hell for that lie. he keeps telling it. we'll tell you why that's wrong and a whole lot more here plus bring you all of the latest on the impact of hurricane sandy. right here on the "full court press." but first, we take a little time out as always to get the latest, today's current news update from lisa ferguson standing by in los angeles. good morning lisa. >> hey bill. good morning everyone. hurricane sandy not only is taking an impact on the east coast but it is also putting a twist in the political schedule today. we are just one week out from the election. neither candidate is campaigning as planned. president obama is staying in d.c. to monitor the storm and help prep for any disaster relief. mitt romney is also putting a stop to his events saying it is out of sensitivity for the millions of people in sandy's path. romney did have events scheduled today in o
chrysler had already announced that actually they were expanding. in ohio and in michigan. they weren't pulling out. mitt romney responded to the instant fact checking not by taking it back but by turning that lie into a new ad for ohio. and then he bought extra air time for it in toledo, where ohio workers make jeeps and where being told falsely that your job's being shipped to china might be personally terrifying news. chrysler tried again to set mr. romney straight on this saying, "jeep production will not be moved from the united states to china." did mr. romney take it back? no. he turned it into another ad, a radio ad, again for ohio. and he expanded it to say the entire auto bailout has been a huge failure. that drew another company into the fact check, gm, which had been saved of course by the auto bailout. a gm spokesman telling the press, "we've clearly entered some parallel universe." also from gm, "at this stage we're looking at hubble telescope-like distances between campaign ads and reality." but here's the thing. it is one thing to lie about your record or even your opp
in the auto plant. it paid off in tow leado where chrysler's adding 1,000 new jobs on the second shift. not in china. right here in ohio. right here in the united states of america. and so one of the things i hope when you're talking to your friends and your neighbors, they're trying to make up their minds these last few days, think about that. think about the issue of trust. think about, you know, do you want a president who's going to tell you what he believes or what he thinks or someone who's going to -- no, who's going to -- well, change the facts. after four years as president, you know me. you may not agree with every decision i've made. you may be frustrated sometimes at the pace of change. but you know what i believe. you know where i stand. you know i tell the truth. you know that i fight for you and your families every single day as hard as i know how. you know that. and -- and you know that i know what real change looks like because i fought for real change. and you've helped me every step of the way. after all we've been through together, we can't give up on real change no
're behaving in ohio with the ads they've put on, this whole thing about chrysler and jeep. they're behaving -- there's an element of apparent desperation on their part. they seem to be throwing a lot of stuff at the wall in ohio which suggests a certain amount of if not desperation, they have a sense that they're losing there. >> mark, you look at the quinnipiac poll this morning, and you see it's still a five-point lead. we've got less than a week till the election. you look at the internals. over 50% of the people there think that in ohio, the economy's getting better. i'm underlining this. because i'm not saying mitt romney can't win. but if you take ohio off the table for mitt romney and it's really close, it's really, really close to being off the table for mitt romney unless there is some massive reaganlike landslide the last week, then suddenly mitt romney's pathway to 270 gets very, very narrow. he's got to run the board or he's got to expand the map. >> and don't forget virginia which also, according to most of the recent polling data, is not at all a sure thing for the president,
sold chrysler to italians that are going to build jeeps in china. a lot of push back from the obama campaign. the ad was dismissed by our last guest. i want to get your thoughts. guest: chrysler has admitted they are going to open a plant in china. they are going to manufacture jeeps in italy they are going to ship to china. why are we not manufacturing them in ohio? i think that is the issue that mitt romney, governor romney, was attempting to promote. the fact of the matter is that we have a substantial loss of automobile manufacturing jobs in ohio between 2008 when the 2011. we have not recovered some of those jobs. some of those jobs, we have recovered. to say that chrysler is not going to be producing jeeps in china is incorrect, because they have admitted that they are going to open a plant in china. they are in the process of doing the right now. >> you think governor romney could have done a better job in how he presented that ad? it has gotten a lot of a pushcart. vice-president biden called it "flagrantly dishonest." he said, >guest: i am not going to get into individual a
-- the chrysler owners are investing in china to boost the market there. they are not cutting back in ohio. they are investing more in the toledo area chrysler planned. the romney campaign has been asked about it. and they stand by it. the suggestion is clear that ohio might lose jobs. host: let's play a little bit of the radio ad that talks about this. >> barack obama says he saved the auto industry, but for who? ohio or china? gm cut 15,000 american jobs, but they are planning to double the number of cars in china which means 15,000 more jobs for china. chrysler plans to start making jeeps in china. what happened to the promises made to autoworkers in ohio? this same hard-working men and women who were told the auto bailout would help them. mitt romney would welcome the auto industry. mitt romney, he will stand up for the auto industry in ohio. not china. host: so that is a radio ad that we were talking about. this has been on television ads across all media markets as well. guest: what i have seen in northeast ohio, yes, there is a version of that that runs. it has drawn a strong rebuke
and chrysler into bankruptcy. and sold chrysler to italians who are going to build jeeps in china. >> really? after all that federal bailout money, it's china that will get all the jobs? right away, the white house unleashed its attack dogs. >> they're running the most scurrilous ad in ohio. they assert that president obama forced chrysler into bankruptcy so the italians could take over chrysler. and ship jeep manufacturing to china. that's what the ad says. that's what the ad said. it's an outrageous lie. >> don avalon is a cnn contributor who also serves as a senior political columnist for "ne "newsweek" and the daily beast. joining from us youngstown, ohio. i know you've done a lot of reporting on this issue. is the ad inaccurate? >> reporter: the ad is inaccurate, but it really is resonating here in ohio, and not in a good way for the romney campaign. a lot of voters i've spoken to, they've heard about the ad, they've seen it and understand it's an attempt to muddy the waters and play fast and loose with the facts. that's not helping the romney campaign. voters i've spoken to say he didn
and endorsements continue. today, romney picked up support of former chrysler cio and hal sperling, saying he is the right man to help detroit and fix auto industry. for the next couple days romney will walk a fine line between trying to rally voters and continue the cam pawn stay on the right side of the relief effort. bret? >> bret: carl cameron traveling with the romney campaign. carl, thank you. a mexican man has become the first to be convicted in the death of the u.s. border agent brian terry two years ago. two rifles known as operation fast and furious found at the shooting scene. the suspect pleaded guilty to first degree murder and faces up to life in prison. animal rights activist and dead fish in california, adds up to an amazing story in grapevine. up next, as the storm passes, the relief efforts gear up. jeeps to the united states. so jeep chrysler came out, fiat, the company, they said, absolutely wrong. general motors, have you ever heard of a company which has got a deal with whoever the next president is, come out and scold the presidential candidate the way there is. everybody we talked to says mitt romney is flat out wrong on this. and, again, we're puzzled that he would do that. he's competitive in ohio. this is a dead heat. statistically a dead heat between romney and obama. very puzzling to hear how this is going over here. >> and just to add to that, the swing voters we're talking to here, there is a sense that this issue resonated. the front pages, the local newspaper here is about romney on the auto industry. >> people are mad. >> and it is registering as an unforced error. people take it very personally here, their jobs, their local economy is connected to the auto bailout and stimulus package according to the mayor here. >> yeah. and, john, listen, the president has a tough sell. it may be an easier sell for mitt romney and the reason i say that is because when everyone
